WHY SHOULD THE DEVIL HAVE ALL THE GOOD MUSIC? Heather Whinna and Vickie Hunter

Documentary Video 94:00 2004 WORLD PREMIERE

A Documentary about the artistic, religious and cultural phenomenon of Christian rock music scene from an outsider’s perspective. Partially shot at the Cornerstone Christian music festival held annually in Bushnell, IL the film features concert and interview footage of underground and nationally recognized bands in the Christian rock community (among them popular Chicago based acts like The Detholz! The Blamed and Ballydowse) as well as those who are a part of the mainstream music industry such as Pedro The Lion, The Danielson Family and Duvall. Also included is commentary from fans, musicians, observers and critics from within the Christian rock scene, as well as commentary from the ‘secular’ music community. (Including Dan Sinker, editor of Punk Planet, Chicago Tribune music critic Greg Kot and musician an engineer Steve Albini) The aspirations of the musicians, their motivations, and their effect on their audience and on the culture at large are all discussed from a broad spectrum of viewpoints, along with critical perspectives on the individual bands and the scene as a whole. Always respectful of their subject Whinna and Hunter provide an in-depth look at this often misunderstood and complex musical subculture.
