“In a dilapidated church, icons of Catholicism run amok, Jesus and Mary Magdalene steal away for an adventurous road trip, and the Pope tends his restless herd with an iron fist. Told with stop-motion animated puppets and mixed media, The Guilt Trip examines the notion that you can always leave, but you never really escape.” – LB
THE MYTH – NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS FAN MOVIE Simon Safranek
Documentary Video 61:00 2003 Czech Republic World Premiere
There are hard-core fans who follow their idol from gig to gig, even if it means flying from London to Prague for a show that will be 95% the same as the show they saw a week ago back home. They spend hours driving and stand outside the venue all afternoon just to get the 1st row again. What motivates this kind of super-fan? Is it fun or a form of self-identification with an idol? Do the fans know each other? Who are they anyway? What causes a person to compulsively follow a tour in this way? And finally, what does the band make of all this? THE MYTH seeks to answer these questions.
With short stage-shots filmmakers profile “The Prophet” himself-Nick Cave- to viewers, and include an interview with members of the Bad Seeds. This leads up to a thought-provoking interview with Cave himself, which, along with some fans’ video-archives of the band goes further to explore the core meaning of the film: the existence and spirit of a Myth and its force.
The Myth- it once existed, but now only traces remain. Most of the fans who attend The Bad Seeds gigs now prefer to listen to the band’s older tracks, produced at the beginning of the ’80s.And most of these fans have been listening to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for only 2 to 5 years, and obviously have never been witness to the notorious gigs performed in the band’s heyday. These fans have them on tape, precious copies 10th generations removed from the master tape. But they’ve never been THERE. But the love of the music and the musicians IS there, and the fans are here now. Their spirits are hungry for the connection, and experience, and although they know they’re late, their exuberance and admiration leads them to pick up and hit the road, following the band.
